Math Galaxy app and ebook review

Math Galaxy provides math games and math worksheets such as the Whole Numbers Balloon Pop app and the Math Galaxy Time and Money Riddles eBook.

Apps:

I had the opportunity to review several apps.  Most of the apps I reviewed, 3rd Grade Math, 4th Grade Math, 6th Grade Mathwere similar but just for different grade levels.  The other app I reviewed was the Times Tables Balloon Pop app about multiplication.

The Times Tables Balloon Pop app starts out with you first select the Times table you would like to work on.  Then the app is a simple app that displays a multiplication fact with several balloons with numbers on it.  When you tap on the right answer the balloon pops and another multiplication question comes up.  This was a fun way for my children to practice multiplication facts.

The other Apps I reviewed were comprehensive math apps that were 3rd Grade Math, 4th Grade Math, 6th Grade Math.  The apps are pretty much the same except the concepts are more difficult for the higher grades. The 6th Grade Math app only has one game but that’s understandable since its for older kids.  I was pleasantly surprised by my son picking up the app and playing it on his own without my prompting.  Many times, I like to download an app and see how long it is before they start using it.

His favorite game to play was the Labyrinth game.  I suspect this is since he really likes mazes.  To play the game you must earn a robot by working on other math facts.

Even though my son hasn’t worked a lot on fractions, he really liked the game for fraction addition.

Along with interactive games, there are also videos

Lastly you can even save your progress.

ebooks:

We were also provided ebooks which provided riddles that you solve by answering all the math problems.  I received Whole Numbers, Fractions, Decimals, Proportions, Percents, and Algebra ebooks.

The ebooks provide plenty of fun practice for all the math problems.  The solutions are well worked out like the Fraction addition shown below.

Overall my son really enjoyed the apps and I found him numerous times playing them for fun.  The ebooks provide a great supplement for any math program you use for your homeschool.

YWAM Heroes of History book review

Disclaimer: I received a FREE copy of this product through the HOMESCHOOL REVIEW CREW in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way.

YWAM Publishing offered us several choices from their Heroes of History series of books and we chose to review the George Washington book. We chose to review the George Washington book since we are currently studying American history.  As a homeschool family for many years, we have always enjoyed the “Heroes of History” books from YWAM Publishing.  There are 26 titles offered in the Heroes of History book series to choose from.

My daughter likes the Heroes of History books because:

  • They are easy to read
  • They cover the whole  life of the hero
  • They provide good lessons from their lives

One of those lessons that hit me was the following quote from George Washington:

“The prevalence of that pacific and friendly disposition among the people of the United States which will induce them to forget their local prejudices and policies, to make those mutual concessions which are requisite to the general prosperity, and in some instances, to sacrifice their individual advantages to the interest of the community.” – George Washington

In our current society we seem to have lost this.  It is amazing how important George Washington was in the founding of our country.  He was truly a great leader.

Study guide:

As part of the review I also received the study guide.  The Study guide is a PDF that I downloaded.

The study guide has two parts.  The first part has quotes, display corner ideas, questions for each chapter, Social Studies, Related themes to explore and Culminating Events.  The section on a display corner gives suggestions on how you can set up a display corner of objects related to the life and times of George Washington.  Part 2 of the study guide has a fact sheet and some maps.

I really liked reading the YWAM Publishing book on George Washington.  I am looking forward to sharing some of the interesting facts about George Washington and lessons that I learned reading the book.  I am looking forward to reading more books in the YWAM Publishing Heroes of History series.

We reviewed just one book from the Heroes of History series, but you can see reviews from other books reviewed by Homeschool Review Crew members by clicking the link below.

Action Bible Review

Disclaimer: I received a FREE copy of this product through the HOMESCHOOL REVIEW CREW in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way.

We are enjoying The Action Bible Anytime Devotions published by David C Cook.  As a father of 6 boys you can imagine that we have a lot of action at our house.  The Action Bible Anytime Devotions book is a soft cover book with lots of colorfull pictures packed with action.

Action Bible

The boys really enjoyed looking at all the pictures.  We try to read devotions every night before bed, so its nice to read The Action Bible Anytime Devotions with all the pictures. The pictures are comic book like, and they are full of action.  The boys especially loved the picture of Job with all his boils and of course the picture of David and Goliath.

Each devotion spans two pages.  There are categories for each devotion.  You can see in the picture below the topic of the devotion is Trust.  The devotion starts out with a verse and then there is a story to illustrate the topic.  Then there are some applications that go along with the lesson and prayers that they can pray.  I really liked the devotional content in The Action Bible Anytime Devotions however, It would have been nice if the pictures on the page matched the Bible story in the devotion.  The boys kept looking for pictures and then wanting to read that Bible story.

While I read The Action Bible Anytime Devotions to my younger kids, I would also recommend it for your older children who can read.  My 12 year old also read some of the devotions and he really enjoyed them and he also enjoyed the pictures.

Book Review – Venturing With God In Congo

Disclaimer: I received a FREE copy of this product through the HOMESCHOOL REVIEW CREW in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way.

We have been reading Venturing with God in Congo from Conjurske Publications out loud as a family in the evenings and really enjoying it! I have been wanting to find a good book to read to my boy’s at night before bed.  The book Venturing with God in Congo has all the makings of a good boys book.  Not only does the book cover look appealing for boys, but it also has spiritual value along with the adventures.

Venturing with God in Congo is a book that follows the missionary Darrell Chaplin, and his family, in the remote African country of Congo.  As I sit here writing this review, I can’t help but think what a Missionaries life was like compared with the current COVID-19 “struggle” we are going through.  The book reveals how isolated the missionaries were from the outside world.  They had limited supplies, and limited contact with the outside world.  The Chaplin’s survived, and they most importantly were able to spread the light of the world, Jesus Christ, to the indigenous people in the Congo. People who as Darrel said, were under the “…cunning deception of the sorcerers, soothsayers, and witch doctors.”

Some of the things we learned after reading through the book is that: Hippo’s can be mean and attack a canoe, Python snakes can swallow an antelope (horns and all), and their skin is self-healing if they get pierced by antelope horns, they eat!  We also learned how dangerous it is to hunt an elephant.   We also learn about how God provided for the Chaplin family.

God’s protection is shown many times including when a Leopard was outside at night.  I really like the line in the book about the Leopard, “Mice disappeared. Insects stilled. The King was here.” God protected the missionary family. “The angel of the Lord encamped round about them that fear him, and delivered them.” (Psalm 34:7)

The Venturing with God in Congo book is a nice hardback book that I would recommend for a read aloud book for your family with the following notes:  First the beginning of the book may not keep all your children’s attention since it is mostly introduction material.  It’s good information but the beginning chapters are longer and may not hold your little child’s attention.  Second since the book is about a different people there are many words that are foreign to English.  There is a pronunciation guide in the front of the book but when you read out loud It can be difficult if you focus on the right pronunciation.  Both of these things are minor and I would still recommend this book for all your children.

We have really enjoyed reading Venturing with God in Congo at night.  Many of the stories are very captivating for boys.  I would recommend reading the stories in Venturing with God in Congo with your family.  It will help your family better know how to pray for missionaries and learn more about Africa.

Book review – If You Were Me and Lived in…

Disclaimer: I received a FREE copy of this product through the HOMESCHOOL REVIEW CREW in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way.

Children’s books like those written by Carole P. Roman can be such a fun way to explore history, or culture or even practice reading.  We received four books from Carole P. Roman’s assorted series to add to our home library.  For this review I was able to choose four of Carole P. Roman’s Children’s books.  The four books I reviewed were: If you were me and lived in… Colonial America, if you were me and lived in… Renaissance Italy, if you were me and lived in…the Mayan Empire, and if you were me and lived in… the Middle Ages.  I chose the above books to help in our current history studies and some time periods we will be studying next.

Currently we are studying early American history so the If you were me and lived in… Colonial America  book is perfect supplement our studies.  The book is mostly focused on the pilgrims and there experience coming to America to have freedom of worship.  The book covers all the aspects of life that children would have experienced in the new colony.  In the back of the book there are several imporatant figures from that time period.

The next book I chose was if you were me and lived in…the Mayan Empire.  I was interested in the Mayan book since I have visited the Yucatan peninsula.  I thought this would be a good opportunity to share with my kids some of what I saw first hand at the Mayan ruins.  It was neat to read about some of the places I visited with my children.  The book covers all aspects of what it would be like if my children lived in the Mayan culture.

The if you were me and lived in…Middle Ages book is probably the longest book in the set of the four books I reviewed.  It is 79 pages full of information.  I didn’t particularly like the pictures in this book but that’s my personal preference.  The book was a wealth of information about the middle ages though.

These books are a good reference books for your homeschool history classes.  All the books listed in this review have important information in the back of the book.  I especially liked the famous artist Bio from if you were me and lived in… Renaissance Italy along with a nice glossary in the back of the book so you can quickly look up some quick facts.

I would highly recomend any of the Carole P. Roman Children’s books for your homeschool. Visit the Homeschool Review Crew blog by clicking the picture below to read more reviews of other books from Carole P. Roman’s assorted series.

The Boxcar Children Early Reader Set Review

Disclaimer: I received a FREE copy of this product through the HOMESCHOOL REVIEW CREW in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way.

We are enjoying The Boxcar Children Early Reader Set based on the books by Gertrude Chandler Warner and published by Albert Whitman & company. We have loved the boxcar classics now we also love The Boxcar Children Early Reader Set. While my older kids have read the original books my younger children are not as familiar with the Boxcar children stories.

As part of the review I recieved four hardback The Boxcar Children Early Reader Set books.  All the books are based on the original books.  The very first book introduces you to the Boxcar children and you learn why they are called the Boxcar children. The Surprise Island book also has a movie you can watch and of course there is a mystery.

The books are nicely illustrated with color pictures on each page.  The reading level is between 6 and 8 years old. My boys especially like the Boxcar Children books because they always have a good mystery.

While the books are for early readers we also found out that The Boxcar Children Early Reader Set are also great to read out loud story books for younger kids. One morning my four year old brought one to me to read to him, and now we have read all four together. I love that there are color pictures on each page. As I am a big fan of the Boxcar Children Books I would highly recommend The Boxcar Children Early Reader Set.
