We have been supplementing our history studies with The Hidden Message of the Great Seal How Foundational Truth From The Dawn Of Liberty May Rescue A Republic In Peril from The Hidden Message, LLC. This book is fascinating! The hidden message is a needed history lesson for our day.

What is it all about

Did you know that the seal of the United States has two sides? Did you know there were several iterations?

This book is quite an exhaustive study of our countries great seal and the history that surrounds it and our nation. It is a 260-page book full of great pictures and quotes! (I am a sucker for pictures since I am a visual learner and there are plenty in this book.) One of the quotes in the book that really seems applicable today is from Patrick Henry, “Bad men cannot make good citizens. It is when people forget God that tyrants forge their chains. A vitiated state of morals, a corrupted public conscience, is incompatible with freedom…”

The book The Hidden Message of the Great Seal covers the history of the seal, the mottos on the seal, the men involved in making the seal, and the message of the seal. Major themes on the seal that are expanded on in the book are virtue, freedom, Providence, and unity. The book also dispels some false information about the seal using the words of our founding fathers and the written record.

How did we use it

One of my boys picked up the book because he is really interested in money and our dollar has the images of the seal (actually you will learn by reading this book there is a slight difference in our money). I thought it was interesting that the seal design was based on the older currency of the day, and one of the seal designers also designed continental money. The book was a great tool to teach him about money, the seal, and our Nations founding.

The author, Michael Kanis, has spent a lot of time researching the American seal. I was impressed with all the Latin motto interpretations he presented. Some of the Latin was above my head, but it’s good to see all the Latin meanings and history laid out so I could understand them. I would love to see a study guide for this book.

I would highly recommend adding The Hidden Message of the Great Seal to your History book collection. Now more than ever we need to be teaching our children what the founding fathers had in mind for our great country and teach them that they have a responsibility to promote freedom and justice. The Easter Storybook Review

Disclaimer: I received a FREE copy of this product through the HOMESCHOOL REVIEW CREW in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way.

We have been enjoying reading as a family The Easter Storybook published by David C CookThe Easter Storybook is a hardback book that contains 40 stories from the Bible about the life of Christ.  Since the book has 40 stories it can be read every day during the time of Lent.

While the book is set up to be read during the 40 days of lent, it does not have to be used only during that time period. I used The Easter Storybook as a read-aloud for my younger boys every night.  I usually let them look through the pictures and then let them choose what story they want me to read to them.  We really enjoyed the pictures that go with each story.  Each story started with a short verse and were on par with a level that kept their interest.

Even though we didn’t read The Easter Storybook for lent, I still plan on using the book for the week between Good Friday and Easter.  I love the idea of reading stories in expectation of a time of celebration like Easter.  So many times the focus is on just one day.  With The Easter Storybook you can build anticipation for the real reason for Easter.

My boys and I really enjoyed The Easter Storybook from David C Cook.  I would recommend it as a read-aloud Bible storybook for your family.  The pictures kept the attention of my boys while I read the story out loud to them.  There were plenty of stories for them to choose from.

My family loved The Easter Storybook. Other families used this product too so be sure to check out their reviews by clicking on the banner.

YWAM Heroes of History book review

Disclaimer: I received a FREE copy of this product through the HOMESCHOOL REVIEW CREW in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way.

YWAM Publishing offered us several choices from their Heroes of History series of books and we chose to review the George Washington book. We chose to review the George Washington book since we are currently studying American history.  As a homeschool family for many years, we have always enjoyed the “Heroes of History” books from YWAM Publishing.  There are 26 titles offered in the Heroes of History book series to choose from.

My daughter likes the Heroes of History books because:

  • They are easy to read
  • They cover the whole  life of the hero
  • They provide good lessons from their lives

One of those lessons that hit me was the following quote from George Washington:

“The prevalence of that pacific and friendly disposition among the people of the United States which will induce them to forget their local prejudices and policies, to make those mutual concessions which are requisite to the general prosperity, and in some instances, to sacrifice their individual advantages to the interest of the community.” – George Washington

In our current society we seem to have lost this.  It is amazing how important George Washington was in the founding of our country.  He was truly a great leader.

Study guide:

As part of the review I also received the study guide.  The Study guide is a PDF that I downloaded.

The study guide has two parts.  The first part has quotes, display corner ideas, questions for each chapter, Social Studies, Related themes to explore and Culminating Events.  The section on a display corner gives suggestions on how you can set up a display corner of objects related to the life and times of George Washington.  Part 2 of the study guide has a fact sheet and some maps.

I really liked reading the YWAM Publishing book on George Washington.  I am looking forward to sharing some of the interesting facts about George Washington and lessons that I learned reading the book.  I am looking forward to reading more books in the YWAM Publishing Heroes of History series.

We reviewed just one book from the Heroes of History series, but you can see reviews from other books reviewed by Homeschool Review Crew members by clicking the link below.

Action Bible Review

We are enjoying The Action Bible Anytime Devotions published by David C Cook.  As a father of 6 boys you can imagine that we have a lot of action at our house.  The Action Bible Anytime Devotions book is a soft cover book with lots of colorfull pictures packed with action.

Action Bible

The boys really enjoyed looking at all the pictures.  We try to read devotions every night before bed, so its nice to read The Action Bible Anytime Devotions with all the pictures. The pictures are comic book like, and they are full of action.  The boys especially loved the picture of Job with all his boils and of course the picture of David and Goliath.

Each devotion spans two pages.  There are categories for each devotion.  You can see in the picture below the topic of the devotion is Trust.  The devotion starts out with a verse and then there is a story to illustrate the topic.  Then there are some applications that go along with the lesson and prayers that they can pray.  I really liked the devotional content in The Action Bible Anytime Devotions however, It would have been nice if the pictures on the page matched the Bible story in the devotion.  The boys kept looking for pictures and then wanting to read that Bible story.

While I read The Action Bible Anytime Devotions to my younger kids, I would also recommend it for your older children who can read.  My 12 year old also read some of the devotions and he really enjoyed them and he also enjoyed the pictures.

Book Review – Venturing With God In Congo

Disclaimer: I received a FREE copy of this product through the HOMESCHOOL REVIEW CREW in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way.

We have been reading Venturing with God in Congo from Conjurske Publications out loud as a family in the evenings and really enjoying it! I have been wanting to find a good book to read to my boy’s at night before bed.  The book Venturing with God in Congo has all the makings of a good boys book.  Not only does the book cover look appealing for boys, but it also has spiritual value along with the adventures.

Venturing with God in Congo is a book that follows the missionary Darrell Chaplin, and his family, in the remote African country of Congo.  As I sit here writing this review, I can’t help but think what a Missionaries life was like compared with the current COVID-19 “struggle” we are going through.  The book reveals how isolated the missionaries were from the outside world.  They had limited supplies, and limited contact with the outside world.  The Chaplin’s survived, and they most importantly were able to spread the light of the world, Jesus Christ, to the indigenous people in the Congo. People who as Darrel said, were under the “…cunning deception of the sorcerers, soothsayers, and witch doctors.”

Some of the things we learned after reading through the book is that: Hippo’s can be mean and attack a canoe, Python snakes can swallow an antelope (horns and all), and their skin is self-healing if they get pierced by antelope horns, they eat!  We also learned how dangerous it is to hunt an elephant.   We also learn about how God provided for the Chaplin family.

God’s protection is shown many times including when a Leopard was outside at night.  I really like the line in the book about the Leopard, “Mice disappeared. Insects stilled. The King was here.” God protected the missionary family. “The angel of the Lord encamped round about them that fear him, and delivered them.” (Psalm 34:7)

The Venturing with God in Congo book is a nice hardback book that I would recommend for a read aloud book for your family with the following notes:  First the beginning of the book may not keep all your children’s attention since it is mostly introduction material.  It’s good information but the beginning chapters are longer and may not hold your little child’s attention.  Second since the book is about a different people there are many words that are foreign to English.  There is a pronunciation guide in the front of the book but when you read out loud It can be difficult if you focus on the right pronunciation.  Both of these things are minor and I would still recommend this book for all your children.

We have really enjoyed reading Venturing with God in Congo at night.  Many of the stories are very captivating for boys.  I would recommend reading the stories in Venturing with God in Congo with your family.  It will help your family better know how to pray for missionaries and learn more about Africa.
